Ph.D. Programs
At Peabody, you’ll join what is arguably the nation’s most highly qualified cadre of Ph.D. students working on issues of education and human development. Our doctoral students enjoy close teamwork with faculty on leading-edge research. Many often combine this with opportunities to pursue their own research interests.

A new cross-disciplinary program, Experimental Education Research Training (ExpERT), integrates field-based research methods with training in learning science theories and principles. Students also learn from faculty who are editors of important academic journals.
Peabody has secured a record level of external investment, including national centers for school choice, learning disabilities, and performance incentives. These grants also provide numerous opportunities for Ph.D. student involvement in research and close working relationships with outstanding scholars. Your faculty include:
- David Dickinson, one of the nation’s leading scholars in cognitive development, literacy, and early childhood education and development. With Ann Kaiser, professor of special education, he spearheads a nearly $3-million study to improve learning skills in the highest-risk preschoolers.
- Douglas Fuchs and Lynn Fuchs are respected leaders in the field of special education and principal investigators of numerous grants. Together, they were given the Career Research Award by the Council for Exceptional Children and the Distinguished Researcher Award by the Special Education Research SIG of the American Educational Research Association in 2003 and 2005.
- James Steiger, who publishes widely on the use of statistical methods in psychology, received the American Psychological Association’s Division 5 Samuel J. Messick Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions for 2006.
- Carolyn Hughes, professor of special education, has used her research to develop a national guide on an important topic, Success for all Students: Promoting Inclusion in Secondary Schools through Peer Buddy Programs. Recent honors include her recognition as Reviewer of the Year for the journal, Research and Practice for Persons with Severe Disabilities.
