What special benefits does Peabody offer?

• Through the Human and Organizational Development major, undergraduates master such core skills as systems theory, organizational structure or group dynamics. During the program, they have the chance to apply their skills in six cities via the HOD internship.
• Classroom experience—as early as the second semester—gives future teachers considerable practice and confidence. Students whom we recommend for licensing must complete practicum placements throughout their program of studies, culminating with the 15-week student teaching experience
• Required, non-education second major gives students majoring in early childhood, elementary, and secondary education both academic and career options. (Exception to this is a choice of Special Education as a second major, which allows dual education majors.)
• Special education undergraduates obtain roughly 500 hours in experiences in classrooms in Nashville and beyond, much of it before their formal student-teaching. Professor Kimberly Paulsen says, "These experiences are extremely beneficial in increasing their awareness of real-life issues in the classroom."
• Service learning combines hands-on work in communities with classroom analysis of issues and action.
• Department-based honors programs allow students to collaborate with faculty members on research related to their career interests.
• Ingram Scholars Program, Scholarships and stipends available based on merit and service
• A state-of the-art freshman campus opening in the Fall of 2008, just steps from Peabody’s classrooms

In 2006, junior Jenny Magill, a secondary education and history major, received both Harry S. Truman and Morris K. Udall Scholarships. She plans to pursue a master’s degree in environmental education and policy, and then to work as a high school teacher or educator and advocate in a nontraditional setting.
