Peabody's strength is in developing research, testing it in national and international education environments, and delivering students the opportunities to learn from the research and apply it in their professional lives. Students have opportunities to learn from leaders in the field of education research, policy, and organizational development and leadership.
A few examples of the questions currently being considered by our faculty follow:
How can the Minority-White academic achievement gap be closed?
Systematic research by Ellen Goldring and Claire Smrekar concentrate on school and school district arrangements that might be successful in this regard. Stella Flores specializes in determining means by which Hispanic students might elevate their participation in the education system.
Are there means by which the teacher workforce might draw upon and retain even more talented individuals and how can these individuals be fairly paid and further motivated?
The research by James Guthrie and Matt Springer in the National Center for Performance Incentives concentrates on a search for such answers.
Will competition improve education?
This is the charge of the National Center for School Choice directed by Professor Mark Berends.
How should college student financial aid be arranged to stretch the use of funds the furthest and help the students most in need?
These questions are routinely explored by Liang Zhang and William Doyle.
How should educational institutions productively present themselves to their publics and their constituents? How should educational institutions handle crises on campus?
These are continuing issues that Tim Caboni regular addresses both in his research and his EdD courses.
What is the nature of leadership in education and how can leaders become even more effective?
This is the focus of the teaching and the research of Peabody faculty such as Michael McClendon, Ellen Goldring, Joseph Murphy,
and James Guthrie.
