Undergraduate Program

Peabody College through the Department of Teaching and Learning offers the bachelor of science degree with majors in early childhood education, elementary education, and secondary education. These undergraduate programs are designed to prepare students for professional careers in their chosen field. Programs for Peabody students include course work in a Liberal Education Core, a professional core, a major area of specialization, and electives. Peabody also provides professional education courses for College of Arts and Science students who want to prepare for teacher licensure.

Students seeking licensure may enroll in Peabody College, the College of Arts and Science, Blair School of Music, or the School of Engineering. There is a special physics/computer technology endorsement program available to Engineering Science students. In all cases, most of the liberal arts course work is taken in the College of Arts and Science, and the professional education course work is taken at Peabody College.

The Department of Teaching and Learning at Peabody has a long and distinguished history of working closely with preservice teachers, schools, and the research community to develop new ideas for instruction and to prepare outstanding teachers. The Peabody education programs are highly ranked nationally and have high visibility at the national and international level.

Programs lead to teacher licensure in the following areas: early childhood (grades PreK-4), elementary (grades K-8), and secondary education (grades 7-12). Secondary education endorsements include English, mathematics, French, Latin, Spanish, German, biology, chemistry, physics, earth/space science, history, economics, political science, psychology, and sociology.

Features of the Programs

• All students majoring in early childhood, elementary, and secondary education are required to have an additional major. This second major is a requirement for licensure as a teacher. It also adds valuable academic preparation for a wide variety of professional options.
• Beginning in the freshman year, students observe and participate in classrooms in local schools. These real-classroom experiences, done in conjunction with university course work, help students integrate educational theory, research, and classroom practice.
• Technology is integrated throughout the programs to support students' learning.
• Students have a variety of opportunities to study abroad. For example, as a culminating experience, education majors have the opportunity to complete part of their student teaching during a summer in Cambridge, England, at Homerton College, and the remaining part in the Nashville area.
• Faculty academic advisers meet with students each semester to monitor and support students' progress through their programs of study.
