Secondary Education Program

The major in secondary education is designed to prepare the student to teach one or more subjects at the secondary level (grades 7-12). Students must complete Liberal Education Core requirements, Professional Education requirements, and a primary area of emphasis in at least one endorsement field, which involves 27 to 36 hours of course work in the discipline and results in a major in that area as defined by the College of Arts and Science. Specific requirements for a second area of endorsement may be obtained from the Office of Teacher Licensure, Peabody Administration Building (Attention: Chris LaFevor). Students must take the appropriate methods course for each area of endorsement.

Vanderbilt students seeking teacher licensure must apply through the Office of Teacher Licensure at Vanderbilt and must meet licensure requirements in effect at the time of their graduation, which may be different from licensure requirements in effect at the time they entered Vanderbilt. Licensure requirements are currently undergoing change. Each year, teacher licensure candidates should consult the current Vanderbilt Undergraduate Catalog and the Peabody College Undergraduate Handbook published by the Office of Student Affairs.
