Letter to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan
Peabody Welcomes Edmund S. Muskie Fellows
The Vanderbilt Career Center offers assistance to teacher education students seeking a teaching position locally, in the U.S., or abroad. Undergraduate and graduate students are urged to contact D'lanna Mason, the Career Center Advisor who works closely with teacher education students.
The Career Center provides information about services (résumé preparation, interviewing skills, national and international directories of public or private schools, etc.) and also sends weekly email messages about services and job openings to all currently enrolled students who have a formally declared education major.
Each February, the Career Center participates in the Nashville Area Teacher Recruitment Fair, usually held at the State Fairgrounds, only a few miles from the Vanderbilt campus. Vanderbilt students who are student teaching on the day of the Career Fair must communicate early in that spring semester with the cooperating teacher, supervisor, and faculty supervisor to gain permission and make arrangements to be absent from student teaching long enough to attend the Career Fair. Recruiters in attendance represent public and private schools from all over the country. It is recommended that students schedule a mock interview prior to the Teacher Recruitment Fair with the Career Center in order to prepare for the event.
Vanderbilt teacher education graduates may become licensed in Tennessee and in one or more additional states upon program completion. They most often accept teaching positions in Tennessee or Georgia. The remaining 50 percent or so go to any state or foreign country of their choice to teach. We recommend that students become licensed in Tennessee (to teach here or at least to facilitate licensure in other states), their home state, and any other state in which they plan to pursue a teaching position. For the past ten years, over 90 percent of Vanderbilt licensed graduates begin teaching the fall after graduation.
