Researchers Probe Pay Incentives for Teachers
When do I find out if I have been selected as a Summer Fellow?
PPI will notify applicants approximately two weeks after the March 1st deadline. Applications received after March 1 will be reviewed on a space-available basis.
How do I arrange for travel to the institute?
You are responsible for making your own travel arrangements. The Nashville International Airport (BNA) is a short cab ride from Vanderbilt University and is served by most national airlines.
Is there public transportation from the airport to Vanderbilt?
While it is possible to take a public bus to campus, it departs the airport infrequently and requires a change of buses at the downtown Nashville Landport. We recommend taking a taxi. The fare will be approximately $25.
Can I attend just a few days of an institute?
No. The institutes are designed as cohesive wholes to maximize the use of your time. Additionally, the other Summer Fellows will rely upon your participation in small group case study analyses and other group efforts. There are no fee adjustments for unattended sessions.
What is your refund policy?
After the institute begins, NO refunds will be given. Notification of withdrawal from an institute must be received in writing at least two weeks in advance of the institute's start date. No refunds are granted after the first day of the institute.
How are housing arrangements made?
The PPI office will make all housing arrangements for participants.
What are the meal arrangements?
Breakfast and lunch are provided each day of the institute. Additionally, there will be several evening functions which will include a meal (e.g., the Welcome BBQ on the first night). However, you will also have at least one evening on which you and your colleagues may wish to explore Nashville and have dinner together. Please plan accordingly.
What are the accommodations like?
Institute faculty and Summer Fellows will all stay in a residence hall within a short walk of the Peabody campus. Each participant will have a private room (towels and linens are provided). Bathrooms are suite-style, shared between two private rooms. All lodgings are air-conditioned.
Is other housing available?
No, all Summer Fellows reside on campus as part of the immersive experience. Much of the work which happens over the course of an institute occurs outside of the formal lectures and sessions. Additionally, the collegial relationships formed during your time on campus will continue once you are a PPI alumnus.
Can I keep a car on campus?
Yes. However, you will not need a car during the institute to get to sessions. Participants may wish to carpool for restaurant and evening exploration.
Do I need a car while at the institute?
No. Transportation to and from the airport via cab is recommended. Most other necessary activities are within walking distance of the university (see above) or a quick cab or bus ride away. Additionally, PPI will provide shuttles to any organized off-campus functions.
Will I have access to email while on campus?
You will have access to the internet via the world wide web, either in the Wyatt Center, on the residential campus, inside The Commons, or in one of the university computer labs. The assumption is that you will have access to your email through a Web email client. If you are affiliated with an organization that uses a specialized email client (e.g., Eudora, Outlook, GroupWise, etc.) rather than a Web email client, you should check with your internet support staff before you come to learn how to access email via a web browser.
Will I be busy (or can I bring a lot of catch-up work)?
The Institutes are designed to maximize your time on-site. In addition to being engaged in sessions during the day, you will have group projects in the evening. There will be a small amount of free time available. For participants who wish to see Nashville-area attractions, visit this link for more information.
Do I need to bring a computer? (Can I bring a computer?)
While you may bring a computer if you wish, they are not necessary for participation. However, if you would like to use a computer in your apartment or for work during the institute sessions, you may bring your own. The Peabody campus has wireless connection to the internet via a standard wireless card (802.11b/g). You will have access to networked computers during the day at the Wyatt Center. These are loaded with Microsoft Office and additional software.
What will the weather be like?
Nashville can get quite warm and humid during the summer months, but most evenings are pleasant and comfortable. The average high temperature in July is 89°F, and the average low is 69°F. Nashville receives an average of 3.97 inches of rain each July.
What kind of clothes should I bring?
Somewhere between casual dress and business casual is appropriate for the entire institute. As you can tell from the above average temperatures, Nashville can occasionally be quite hot and humid during July! Cool and comfortable should be the rule of thumb as you pack.
