Child Studies FAQ

What kind of jobs would I be able to get as a graduate of the Child Studies program?
The M.Ed. in Child Studies program prepares you for careers in which your expertise in child development will be valued. In addition to positions in health care, private corporations and foundations and numerous small business opportunities, here are some of the ways the skills you learn in the Child Studies program can be applied after graduation:

• Arts: Production for children's broadcast and print media including writing and editing for children and/ or their parents
• Community Centers: After-school program direction, leadership roles in teen programs
• Education: Teaching or consultation for gifted and talented students, parent education, consultant to public/private schools, child care program direction, multicultural services
• Policy: Child advocacy, service with local and federal government agencies, children's services agencies
• Programming: Director of children's programs in museums, zoos, libraries, parks, and recreation centers
• Public Health: Teen pregnancy prevention agencies, departments of health, skills training, parent education, eating disorder clinics
• Universities: Research associate, graduate student

Must I have an undergraduate major in psychology to compete for a position in the M.Ed. in Child Studies program?
The program is open to students from varied disciplines. We're looking for bright, motivated individuals who have a strong interest in working with children and families. To date, our students have been child studies, child development, education, human and organizational development and psychology majors.

What is the minimum GRE score and GPA required?
Your combined GRE score should be at least 1000 and your GPA should be 3.0 or higher.

What are the goals of the program?
While working toward your master's, you will deepen your understanding of:

• How children and adolescents develop, learn and think
• How families, schools and communities impact children's development
• How to interpret, design, and conduct research related to children
• How to translate theory-based knowledge into practical strategies for workplace settings
• How to influence policy
• How to strengthen children, families and neighborhoods

Is financial aid available for this program?
All students are welcome to complete Peabody College's financial aid application which can be found in our financial aid section. This application will allow you to compete for College-wide awards.
