Peabody was one of the first colleges at Vanderbilt to support wireless networking on a large scale. All of buildings at Peabody have wireless capability - and in most cases this coverage extends to the surrounding lawns. During the summer of 2004, all of the access points at Peabody were upgraded to support high speed (802.11g) coverage.
If you are interested in other areas at Vanderbilt that have wireless coverage, consult the Campus Wireless LAN Deployment page.
To access the wireless net, you need the following:
Anything you can do with a wired connection - email, web browsing, etc. - but a wireless connection tends to be slower than a wired one, so large file downloads are discouraged.
Yes, all Vanderbilt residence halls have wireless access.
No. That is not allowed. Wireless transmitters work on a limited number of "channels" that can overlap and cause problems which are nearly impossible to diagnose. 2.4 GHz cordless phones and microwave ovens also generate frequencies which are very close to ones wireless networks use. As a result, ITS will require that any unauthorized transmitters be disconnected. The wired port in your room provides a connection 10 times faster than the typical wired connection.
