The fifth-year master’s programs are available only Vanderbilt undergraduate students.
I am interested in visiting the campus. How can I arrange a guided tour?
Campus visits are encouraged. Contact the department you are interested in applying to directly to arrange your visit.

International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) provides advice, counseling, and advocacy regarding immigration, cross-cultural, and related personal matters. In addition, they host activities and events, oversee the English Language Center, and much more.

Who can apply for federal financial aid?
In order to qualify for federal financial aid, you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and be enrolled in a degree-seeking program with at least a half-time status. Federal financial aid includes federal student loans and federal work-study. International students who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents can apply for a private alternative educational loan only with the assistance of a U.S. citizen or permanent resident as a cosigner.
What do I need to know about private educational loans?
Private educational loans are offered by private lenders and there are no federal financial aid forms to complete. To receive a private educational loan, you must have a valid credit history as defined by the lender of the loan. A list of these lenders may be obtained through the Vanderbilt University Office of Student Financial Aid.
How can I find out about my credit history?
Federal law now enables you to request a free credit report from the three major reporting agencies once every 12 months. To request your credit report, go to: www.annualcreditreport.com
How do I apply for financial aid as a graduate or professional student?
The office of student financial aid awards federal loans and federal work-study to students who qualify based on the information provided on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Your completed FAFSA should be received by the federal processors by the priority deadline of May 1. This will mean completing the forms online prior to that date or completing the paper application and mailing your forms by at least April 15 to insure a timely arrival. Applications received after the priority deadline will be considered as resources permit. Graduate and professional students are also eligible to be awarded additional funding through their program’s department such as assistantships and fellowships. Each department disburses their own funds, so graduate and professional students should contact their department to inquire about these financial awards and assistantships. Are scholarships available?
Yes. Scholarships are available for graduate students through Vanderbilt and there are also additional monies available for Peabody graduate students as well as money available from departments. All students applying for college-wide or department scholarships must complete the Peabody financial aid application after applying for admission.
What is the difference between subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford loans?
With the subsidized Stafford loan, the interest is paid by the government while the student is in school and during the grace period. The interest on the unsubsidized Stafford loan accrues while the student is in school and during the grace period. The student has the option of paying the interest on the unsubsidized Stafford while in school or deferring the interest payment until after graduation which would allow the interest to accumulate, therefore increasing the principal of the loan.
What is the difference between merit-based and need-based aid?
Merit-based aid is awarded primarily on the basis of academic merit and potential. Need-based aid eligibility is determined by the difference between the amount the student is expected to pay, any additional financial aid resources, and the total cost of attendance.
Do I have to file for need-based aid every year?
Yes. The priority deadline to submit the FAFSA to the processor and the Vanderbilt financial aid application to the Vanderbilt Office of Student Financial Aid is May 1.
How can I find detailed information regarding student loans?
You can search the Department of Education’s Web site for complete information regarding financial aid and student loans. Detailed information with regard to financial aid can also be found at: www.finaid.org.
If I receive an outside scholarship do I have to report it to the Vanderbilt Office of Student Financial Aid?
Yes. If you are the recipient of any form of financial assistance from the University or an outside foundation you must report the scholarship amount to the office of student financial aid. Your aid may be adjusted if additional financial assistance exceeds your demonstrated financial need and/or overall cost of attendance.
