"So, what is HOD?"
You've probably heard this question before. Everyone understands a major like English or economics, but HOD is a complex major that encompasses many areas of study. Here are some tips to help you discuss with confidence the history of HOD and its unique curriculum.
History
The HOD degree was established more than 20 years ago in response to a growing demand by students and parents for academic relevance to post-college career needs. The major quickly captured the interest and imagination of incoming freshmen.
In its first year, the college expected nine students to sign up; the actual number of enrollees was 20. Today the number of HOD majors has risen to more than 700, making it the most popular major at Vanderbilt, despite the rigorous curriculum and competition for acceptance.
An unparalleled undergraduate learning experience
An undergraduate career in HOD focuses on development in many areas. The major emphasizes:
- Management strategies and problem solving to prepare leaders for a variety of organizational settings
- Community service to foster a compassionate, empathetic mindset
- Hands-on, real-world experience
Going beyond the classroom
Finally, the HOD capstone experience allows students to gain real-life experience by completing a semester-long internship. Nearly 60 percent of HOD graduates are offered jobs as a result of their internships. The list of companies and organizations where HOD interns have served reads like a "Who's Who" of business, finance, fashion, and media.
"Yes, HOD does ground you with a strong core education of statistics, math, and analytical thinking," says Libby Williams, an HOD graduate. "However, the major doesn't stop there."
"It allows you to develop leadership and communications skills and teaches you to sucessfully apply them to business and social situations. Not many majors can make this claim."
The next time someone asks you what you majored in in college, feel free to share with them the information above. Then again, you could just say, "Success."
