As we know, the HOD internship sometimes prevented students from having a semester abroad experience because of scheduling conflicts. Now HOD students can intern in London, England, which allows them to have both options. London was incorporated into the HOD program a few years ago in response to this need and to enhance the new tracks in Public Policy and International Leadership and Development.
According to Vicki Davis, HOD Internship Director, "Spending time abroad is a great way to round out the college experience, perhaps the richest way to embrace another culture is by immersing in the daily life through work and study. Students in the London internship experience this to the fullest."
The caliber of sites is just as impressive as they are in the States. Many are global corporations that allow interns to experience business and policy issues from a 21st century perspective.
Sites include:
Office of Julian Brazier (Parliament member)
Glaxo Smith Kline
Sotheby's
Estee Lauder
Harvey Nichols (luxury lifestyle retailer)
The Center for Social Justice—a think tank devoted to economic and social development in the U.K.
Another site is the leading PR firm Neville McCarthy, which has been a long-time supporter of the internship program. They enlisted internship students to help plan and implement a special event for Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York (also known as Fergie).
In fact, according to many of the students the challenge of the London program hasn't been finding good sites but finding good food!
Students take their classes in one of London's most historical clubs, The Arts Club. The Arts Club has long served as a meeting place for academics, artists, and writers such as Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling, Elizabeth Frink, and now HOD interns!
For those wishing to go further afield, HOD has established a distance learning program that allows students to pursue internship opportunities anywhere in the world. This fall students are working in the Caribbean, Paris, Uganda, and Ecuador.
WE NEED YOUR HELP, HOD ALUMNI! HOD is an ever-expanding program that is always looking for new and exciting opportunities for our students.
* Be an internship sponsor or site supervisor. If you live in any of the cities listed above and work with an organization that would like to have an HOD intern, please e-mail us or call (615) 322-8273.
* Help support students participating in the HOD internship program through your gifts to Peabody! The internship program offers an exceptional learning opportunity and with your help we can continue to make this possible.
