Q&A with Christopher P. Loss
Class size, salary plan disregards expert studies
If charter schools are the future of Nashville education, they deserve a closer look
The practicum experience provides students the opportunity to apply and integrate knowledge acquired through course work. In clarifying and broadening career goals, the practicum experience assists students in discovering, developing, and refining necessary competencies and skills for their proposed career objectives.
Field Experience
The bulk of the course work associated with the M.P.P. capstone experience will be spent on-site in a supervised position. You should negotiate for experiences that will aid you in the development of skills and knowledge applicable to your intended career trajectory. Students usually establish their own contacts to develop a practicum, or they may work through an instructor. Certain restrictions and rules apply to ensure a challenging capstone environment. This restriction should be discussed with the department.
Time Commitment and Requirements
The time commitment in the practicum may vary according to the nature of the assignment or project. However, all projects must meet a minimum requirement of 45 contact hours per credit hour earned. Students and on-site supervisors should mutually agree upon the hours to be worked per week to accomplish the learning objectives of the placement. Students can earn between three and six credit hours for the capstone practicum, which includes the time spent in developing the M.P.P. policy briefing paper.
Each student will also compile a binder of materials over the course of the practicum. The final requirement in the practicum involves applying theoretical material from course work to relevant policy and practice situations from the practicum. Through consultation with their advisers, students will sign up for a three-credit independent study course to complete the paper.
