Clearance is considered complete when a "no indication" letter is received from TBI AND a completed Background Clearance Consent form has been submitted to the BCO.
Peabody College requires that all persons, whose Peabody activities cause them to have direct contact with children and/or vulnerable adults, be fingerprinted and pass a criminal background records check prior to such contact. This policy is in compliance with Tennessee laws, public and private school systems, and Vanderbilt University policy.
Persons Affected by the Policy
Persons affected by this policy include researchers, teachers, students, mentors, support and technical staff, and any others who are engaged in Peabody activities such as observing, testing, teaching, mentoring, documenting, or overseeing children and/or vulnerable adults. All persons engaged in these activities should read the Background Clearance Policy page.
It is important to note that Peabody teacher education undergraduate and graduate students must be fingerprinted within two weeks of beginning courses.
Completed Clearance
Clearance is considered complete when a "no indication" letter is received from TBI and a completed Background Clearance Consent form has been submitted to the BCO. Clearance is NOT complete when an "indication" letter is received from TBI. The BCO will contact that person for additional information. When additional information is requested the background clearance remains pending and no activities involving children under 18 and/or vulnerable adults can occur. Clearance to work directly with children under 18 and/or vulnerable adults should not be considered automatic because the process of being fingerprinted has been completed. Clearance to work directly with children under 18 and/or vulnerable adults must be confirmed by the Backround Clearance Office.

Peabody's Background Clearance Officer, Thom Garrison, coordinates the fingerprinting and clearance process.
