Camilla Benbow: Summer learning options affordable
New Peabody graduates fill teaching roles in Nashville’s lowest-performing middle schools
Commencement 2012 Recap
While professional development opportunities for institutional advancement practitioners abound, most have limited utility for individuals who lead advancement organizations or who have amassed significant professional experience. Most are designed for practitioners new or semi-new to the profession, or are comprised of multiple presenters telling “war stories” about their careers or home institutions.
The Institute for Institutional Advancement Leadership takes a different approach. An intensive one-week experience, the institute is designed to expose participants to cutting-edge theoretical explorations of institutional advancement best practices. Participants will focus on applying theories derived from the social and behavioral sciences to the practice of institutional advancement on a college campus.
Additionally, fellows will explore the various functional areas of colleges and universities, with the perspective that a deep, theoretical understanding of how colleges and universities work will aid in building stronger advancement organizations. Also, upon assuming a cabinet-level position, those charged with leading advancement divisions must participate in strategic decision-making for the whole of the institution and management of the entire educational enterprise.
Participation in these endeavors necessitates a broad understanding of issues related to college and university management. Unfortunately, senior advancement administrators typically rise to positions of leadership on the strength of their ability to generate institutional support, not manage the operations of an entire university. The institute addresses this need by exploring multiple domains of university management.
Participants will depart with an enhanced ability to make decisions for their home organizations grounded in theory and supported by data. Summer fellows will leave Vanderbilt with a deep understanding of why specific techniques work and the capacity to tie this knowledge to real-world strategic decisions which will increase the effectiveness of their home institutions.
“I found the Peabody Summer Institute to be tremendously beneficial. Not only were the topics applicable and the presenters informative, the great sense of collegiality amongst the attendees allowed me to return home with new idea, re-energized for my work and an expanded circle of colleagues at other schools.” – Chris Cleveland, High School Principal, Wesleyan School
