Many teachers use time after the Challenge in the Jasper adventure has been solved to focus students' attention on the mathematics they applied during the excitement of coming up with their solutions. The Jasper context provides a natural anchor for additional mathematical activities and lessons. Teachers may develop their own problems, or have students solve selected analogous problems provided on the laserdisc to help deepen their understanding of the concepts and skills involved in this Jasper adventure, and extension problems to broaden their learning into related subject areas.
Challenge
Five teachers have told Chris that they are willing to be dunked.
Prepare a business plan for the dunking machine project as if you were making the presentation to Ms. Stieger.
Analogous Problems
The first five analogous problems on the laserdisc build on the context of The Big Splash to explore concepts introduced in the adventure. Two problems focus on the use of samples to provide reliable information. One problem helps students learn to evaluate risk, using data related to the frequency of firefighters being summoned to a fire. Another problem revisits the bucket filling scene in the story to explore the concept of variability. The fifth problem helps students consider feasibility issues. The last two problems provide students with an opportunity to transfer what they learned solving The Big Splash into a new business planning situation where students are asked to evaluate business plans presented by two different salesmen.
