Non-Traditional Students (Jim and Linda)
Jim: I was surprised at the kids that had a hard time and those that didn't. My lower level kids seemed to be able to pick up on so much more than what I thought that they would be able to.
Linda: It gave them a lot of self-confidence. People treated them as part of a group. To know that they can come up with an idea that is useful in solving an episode or just a little piece of it, that it couldn't be solved if they hadn't come up with that part.
Jasper helps kids see that you come across a lot of problems in real life that you have to know how to solve that involve math and they involve things that really happen, like running out of gas, or how many miles or many hours does it take you to get from one place to another. And Jasper is a much more fun way of learning math than just reading words out of a book. You don't have to be a good reader to do Jasper you just have to pay attention and have some imagination and it built a lot of respect and a lot of self-esteem. Kids like Jasper because they got to each contribute and they got to listen to their friends and work with their friends.
Student 1: I like Jasper because it's a fun way to learn.
Student 2: I like watching it instead of reading it out of a book.
Student 3: It makes math exciting, really it does.
Student 4: It's kind of hard, but you feel good when you come up with the answer.
