Vanderbilt graduates inaugural class of students with intellectual disabilities
More students with disabilities heading to college
Joseph Wehby, associate professor of Special Education, recently received funding from the National Institute of Health for a five-year project that will investigate the effectiveness of academic and behavioral intervention on the reintegration of students receiving special education services for emotional and behavioral disorders. Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) K-3 special education classes will participate in the study.
The RECAP Multi-Component Behavioral and Reading Intervention Program for Reintegrating Special Education Students is a collaborative effort between Wehby, Susan Han (PI) research assistant professor of Psychology, and Bahr Weiss, associate professor of Psychology.
Previous research by Han and Weiss has defined behavioral techniques for reintegration of students in early grades with emotional/behavioral disorders. The participation of Wehby brings an academic component to their research. Wehby conducts research in the areas of behavior disorders and reading disabilities and intervention.
Using established evidence-based practices, the project will provide intensive academic tutoring in reading skills development. Periodic assessment will be used to guide instruction and establish and support the implementation of a classroom-based social/emotional skills training curriculum and effective behavior management system.
