Peabody graduate students are making an impact in Metro schools
Peabody's master of education program in English Language Learners is open to students who already possess a state teaching license or others who wish to pursue advanced study in the area of teaching linguistically diverse students in international settings. The program is designed to introduce students to the foundational and practical information to effectively serve populations who are learning English as a second language. The program consists of two strands, teaching English language learners in U.S. educational settings and teaching English in an international setting.
Teaching English language learners in the U. S.
Major Requirements (15 semester hours)
Electives (6 semester hours)
Choose two courses of a foreign language at the 200 level or above. Depending on students' second language experience, graduate level instructional methods or English Education literature courses may be taken in lieu of foreign language coursework with consent of ELL faculty.
Professional Education Core (9 semester hours) At least two of the four areas must be represented:
A. Humanistic Dimensions of Education
B. Behavioral Studies
C. Teaching Strategies and Curriculum
D. Assessment and Research Tools
Teaching English Internationally
Peabody's master of education in English Language Learners, the Teaching English in an International Setting strand is open to students who wish to teach English language learners in an international setting and is aligned with Teachers of English to Students of Other Languages (TESOL) standards.

Choose 3 credits in courses in graduate level educational linguistics, second language literacy, or English Education literature courses may be taken with consent of ELL faculty.
Language Requirement: Students will demonstrate proficiency in social, business/workplace and academic English as demonstrated by the ACTFL, the Michigan Placement Test, and /or the Oral Language Interview and written test.
All students have the option of completing a capstone experience or writing a thesis.
Total is 30 semester hours minimum.
