When you connect your computer to the Vanderbilt network, you will have access to one of the fastest connections to the Internet that you have probably ever used. Vanderbilt is one of the founding members of the Internet 2 Consortium, a group which is helping to define the future of the Internet.
Wired Magazine rated Vanderbilt the third "Best" school in the country for "Cyber Liberties."
You have access to a very fast network with very reasonable usage policies.
We expect that you use the network responsibly. You agreed to Vanderbilt's Acceptable Use Policy when you signed up for your VUnet ID. Now that you have time to read it that document more carefully (you were in a hurry when you signed up - weren't you?), it will explain what you should and should not do on the network.
The university, in conjunction with the Vanderbilt Student Government Association, has established Bandwidth usage limits for dorm users. Unless you set up a server; do not pay attention to the settings of peer-to-peer programs (like Gnutella, Kazaa, or Morpheus), or are "caught" by a virus - you should not run afoul of these limits. Abuse of bandwidth effects all students, in that it slows down what would otherwise be a very fast path to the Internet.
