Professor Neitzel is interested in studying children's cognitive development within the context of the family. She has focused her research primarily on the relations among a variety of familial socialization influences and the development of young children's metacognition and academic self-regulatory behaviors, strategy use and early expertise, and conceptual understanding and higher order thinking skills. She is also interested in the relations among different aspects of children's early interests expressed through play in the home and young children's subsequent metacognitive knowledge, cognitive management skills, and informational preferences and pursuits in school.
