Cheri Hoffman graduated summa cum laude from Syracuse University with a B.S. in Child Development in 1995, and in 1999 received a Master's Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Trevecca Nazarene University. She spent 10 years working with adolescents in a variety of settings, from counseling young women in a residential program to leading support groups for teen moms to running a mentoring program in a teen entertainment/recreation facility.
Cheri chose Vanderbilt's Community Research and Action program to blend her experience with the need she sees for research and evaluation of current efforts in the field. The National Institute of Mental Health's (NIMH) Mental Health Services Research Training Grant currently supports Cheri's research and education.
Her main research and practice interests are in adolescent mental health and issues of transition for youth with Serious Emotional Disturbance as they become independent adults. She is also interested in the issues of foster care youth as they age out of the system and attempt to become independent adults, and of youth leaving various residential treatment programs as they encounter "real world" environments again.
Originally from New York State - and a true Yankee fan - Cheri has made her home in Nashville since 1996 (and gladly adopted the Titans as her team). She is also a professional photographer and freelance writer.
