Small Research Grants Program

Purpose:	To provide support for research that contributes to the individual's and Peabody's scholarly advancement. To provide nurturance of excellent research by faculty, especially junior faculty, who may have limited funding opportunities or research that may stimulate subsequent external funding. New faculty with start-up funding are a low priority for this program. Preference will be given to those who have not previously been awarded a Small Grant. However, productivity on the prior grant will be considered in making an award.
Eligibility:	All faculty, including Research Associates, Research Professors, Clinical and Practice, whose primary appointment is with Peabody may apply.
Award:	Up to $10,000, with expected average of $5,000 to $6,000. If given an award, the applicant is expected to submit any grant proposal based on that award through Peabody College.
Proposal Content and Application Procedures:	PROPOSAL CONTENT Research Program Describe the problem or research area and discuss briefly what will be accomplished by grant activities. Describe how the proposal fits with your current or future research program. List prior research in the area and plans for future development of the research program including, where appropriate, external funding possibilities. Explain the potential impact of the research and the research program. Activities/Timeline If no more than a page, list the activities and timeline for accomplishing the activities associated with the research. Describe specifically your activities and responsibilities. Describe the activities of others who are funded on the grant. Budget List expenditures by category (equipment, research assistant, supplies, travel, etc.). Funds should not be used to support graduate students during the academic year, nor should they be used for conference travel or membership dues, for example. Tie each proposed expenditure to the proposed research, explaining why the expenditure is needed to carry out project activities. Faculty salaries may not be funded from small grants. APPLICATION PROCEDURES If previously submitted to Intramural Discovery Grants Program, the IDGP format may be used. Attach a cover letter addressing the question as to whether or not you have previously been awarded a Small Grant. Attach your vitae to the proposal (an abbreviated vitae in the case of senior faculty). Submit an electronic version of all components to leonard.bickman@vanderbilt.edu and copy tonya.m.simmons@vanderbilt.edu. A brief final report is due one year after the funds are received. Deadline:	Announced semi-annually in the Spring and Fall. Contact ORE for specific dates.
Payment Procedure:	If awarded, a fund will be set up by the Dean's office and managed at the departmental level by the AA/AO.
