Dare to Change the World.

EARN YOUR MASTER OF EDUCATION AT VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY PEABODY COLLEGE

Crescere Aude. In English, it means “dare to grow.” It’s Vanderbilt’s motto. (We pronounce it kreh-sheh-ray ow-day.) At Peabody, we are committed to helping you grow into a leader prepared to enhance the human condition, create social and educational change, and make the world a better place.

As a student in one of our master’s degree programs, you’ll learn to generate opportunity in an increasingly diverse society, whether it’s in social service agencies, public schools, or in academic, community-based, or policy settings. You’ll become a global citizen who contributes to the betterment of society.

For example, our #1 ranked Department of Special Education equips special educators to expand access and opportunity for students with disabilities or with behavioral disorders. The  Learning, Diversity, and Urban Studies  program centers on promoting community leadership, pursuing educational equity and justice, and bringing underrepresented voices into the public arena. Exploring the cultural, cognitive, social, political, identity-oriented, and individual influences on education, Peabody’s  English Language Learners  program prepares you to teach some of the 5 million ELL students in U.S. public schools or students in international settings. Peabody’s  Learning and Design program prepares you to create innovative and equitable learning environments both in and out of school.

Our students deserve teachers who have deeply considered the connection of their cultural identities to their words and actions. The learning that I experience in LDUS was not limited to coursework and lectures. I learned from difficult conversations about race, class, and history with my LDUS peers and lengthy after-dinner discussions outside class with professors and classmates.

Suxin Chen - Human Development Counseling (HDC)

Suxin Chen is a student in the Human Development Counseling (HDC) program on the Clinical Mental Health Counseling track at Peabody. She is originally from Shrewsbury, Massachusetts and graduated from Sewanee: The University of the South in 2019 with a B.A. in Psychology.

Prior to studying at Vanderbilt, Suxin served as an Americorps VISTA for the South Cumberland Plateau VISTA Program. She worked with a Head Start program serving families in rural communities, developing education and awareness to cultivate resilience and positive adaptation to adversity and adverse childhood experiences.

Suxin chose to attend Peabody because of the HDC program's emphasis on longitudinal human development through the lens of relationships between individuals, environments, and human systems. She was also drawn to the supportive community that Peabody students, faculty, and staff have built and knew this strong sense of community would help her flourish during the duration of her program.
