Language and Literacy

Early language development is foundational to all communication and enables children’s participation in academic and social spheres, while early literacy skills are the building blocks for reading and writing.

SGS Children in Class

Focus Area Description

Researchers in this core area are interested in ways that language develops (including social communication, vocabulary and grammar), in the fundamental role that language plays in literacy learning, and in the development of early literacy skills (including phonological awareness and print awareness). Research in this area also focuses on individual differences in how language, reading and writing develop over time and in approaches that support these processes.
