Early cognitive and motor development is foundational to future learning and performance. Early cognitive development describes the processes involved in thinking, learning, memory, attention and problem solving. In infancy, motor development drives this process as these developing skills provide new opportunities for learning.
Research in this core area examines how infants and young children learn about the world through exploration, observation and social interactions, and how each promotes cognitive development, including executive functioning, theory of mind, and scientific interest and reasoning.
