Research Interests

Matias’s research focuses on the relationship between higher education programs, people’s career pathways, and their labor market outcomes in both the U.S. and Latin America. Drawing from his experience working at a Chilean community college, Matias explores how current and future policies can enhance students’ career prospects and labor market outcomes.

Previously, he studied the impact of corequisite remedial courses in a Chilean community college, examining how these courses not only equip students with essential knowledge but also do so without delaying their educational progress. His current research investigates how population distribution affects access to post-secondary education and its economic implications across Chile’s regions. Additionally, he examines the effectiveness of stackable credential policies in Tennessee, analyzing how rural and urban students navigate credential stacking and whether these policies successfully mitigate structural barriers to higher education access.
