Gina Frieden

Research: Dr. Frieden’s research focus is counselor training with specific interests in behavioral health, adult transitions and loss.  As the Principle Investigator of a four-year HRSA Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training Grant, she is working with community partners to develop behavioral health training sites for students that offer interprofessional collaboration with other health care professionals. The research aims to improve health outcomes while also training counselors in a multidisciplinary team-based approach. Recent conference presentations and workshops have focused on applying developmental principles in clinical practice and classroom instruction.

Teaching:  Graduate courses taught include Advanced Developmental Counseling (HDC 6440); A Developmental Approach to Grief and Loss (HDC 6310); Prepracticum (HDC 6330); Practicum (HDC 7950); and CMHC Internship (HDC 7980). Professor Frieden has also taught in the undergraduate program including courses in Applied Human Development and Internship.

Service: Dr. Frieden’s university and departmental service includes serving until 2019 as Director of Human Development Counseling which included chairing program accreditation visits, coordinating program evaluation and overseeing student admissions. At Vanderbilt, she served as a member of the Mental Health Support Network Working Group and currently serves on the Center for Student Wellbeing Advisory Board. She is part of a group of interdisciplinary faculty who work with the Vanderbilt Program in Interprofessional Learning (VPIL) training students in interprofessional team-based care.  She has served as past President of Tennessee Counselor Education and Supervision, a division of TCA.  Professor Frieden has also served on a journal editorial board and held leadership positions with counseling related professional organizations, associations, and committees.

Community Engagement: Dr. Frieden is collaborating with community partners to raise awareness of the role of counselors in behavioral health teams and the benefits of trauma informed care and strength-based practice.  She is working to develop a network of sites that can offer team-based care to vulnerable populations.
