On behalf of the Department of Teaching and Learning and the Reading Education program, welcome to Peabody College.

Our applicants for admission to the READ program were particularly competitive this year, and your application was among the strongest. Congratulations on your admission. Now, breathe out. The hard work you've done to prepare for Vanderbilt has paid off, and it's time to start imagining yourself on our campus.

The Peabody community is a particularly special one. The READ cohort is a particularly close-knit group, and we have the benefit of having diverse interests where much learning takes place.

A question that many prospective students have is about course structure. Overall, there are four required courses, a yearlong practicum, and four electives where you can specialize in a professional core area that interests you (language arts, writing, digital, etc.). In the fall and spring semesters, students register for four courses. Typically, each course meets once a week for about 3 hours. For example, this semester one student has class on Monday morning, Tuesday morning, Wednesday afternoon and Thursday evening. Sometimes people take a morning and afternoon in the same day depending on interests. When not in class, this student is either working here in the department to earn money, working on her practicum hours, or other things of her choice. So each day is pretty flexible, and you have time to work, study, and play.

We are on Instagram. These are places that you can see current things happening within the program.

If you have specific questions about the program, I'm happy to answer them.

Again, welcome.

What has been the highlight of your program thus far? “Meeting my cohort and taking classes from amazing faculty. I have grown already in my academic and professional pursuits in feeling more equipped in my field. Moving to come to Vanderbilt knowing nobody was a huge step, and the people of Peabody have been incredible.
